March 8 Favorites: TV Shows to watch (when not reading).

Bit of a puzzler this week. I . . . don’t actually consume much media other than my books. I am a book junkie. The husband mainlines Netflix shows, but it’s the way he GOES TO SLEEP, how can you possibly fall asleep with a show going and light and people talking and plots happening, WHO DOES THAT? If you quiz him about what happened in the show later he has only the vaguest idea. I love the man, but his ways are strange.

Still. I do catch the occasional show. It may take me years to get through all of the seasons, but I get there eventually. Here are the ones I consider my favorites. The new Netflix commercials say we each have six shows in common with someone else, so who knows? I might have them in common with you. I’d love to hear, if that’s the case.

1. Buffy The Vampire Slayer

First and most beloved in my heart and I don’t care what anyone says, this will always be my favorite. The snappy dialogue. The terrible special effects. The monsters. Musical episodes. Creepy Gentlemen. Four-inch-high Fear Demons. Giles! Giles is the best part. The crazy bananas plot twists. All the feelings it makes me feel. The ugly crying season six makes me cry. Spike + Buffy, forever.

2. Dr. Who

I need to be in the right mood for this one. Read; I need to be mentally prepared for Stephen Moffat to rip my heart out and feed it to me. The little script gnome. But god do I love the time-traveling shenanigans. Still haven’t caught up on the most recent season, though.

3. The Great British Bake Off

Sweets. What more do you need to know? There is NOTHING I love more than watching amateur bakers create insane delicacies under pressure. Will I ever try making my own puff pastry? Nope. Maybe some homemade genoise sponge? Also no. But man it’s fun watching other people do it. And what other show has such gentle eliminations? They are so quintessentially British in their send-off.

4. Bones

Who remembers this one? The later seasons suffered in quality, I admit. Honestly, I never have watched the last two. But I love my weirdly antisocial genius Temperance Brennan, I adore how Booth deals with her, and I can’t get enough of the parade of interns that have to survive her. The first few seasons are so awesome.

5. Parks and Recreation

This is like the perfect meld of cast and situation. Everyone in it is stellar. Yes, even Tom. The one-liners from this show are LEGION. Pawnee, Indiana is my happy place. Plus, Ron Swanson.

6. Game of Thrones

I can only stand so many tragic deaths, so I’ve been catching up on this one VERY SLOWLY. When I hit gruesome betrayal saturation point and I’m yelling at the TV, I know it’s time for a break. But I can’t stay away long, especially not from my poor Starks. I’m going on record right now with the prediction that Jon and Daenerys are going to end up sharing the Iron Throne. Ice & Fire. It just makes sense!

7. Top Gear/The Grand Tour

It was a blow when the BBC dropped Top Gear (I 100% believe the story that it was for Jeremy Clarkson punching a producer, it’s so easy to picture him doing that) but The Grand Tour is still fantastically full of the banter I’ve come to know and love. I especially like the crazy ways the guys pronounce words like “aluminum” and “Prius”. James May is my bae. No one can call Richard Hammond a pillock like he does. Oh, yeah, and there’s some car stuff, occasionally.

8. Firefly

Joss Whedon is my buzzword. If it’s a Whedon show, I will watch it and love it. It’s just a given, okay? Big networks, like the one whose name rhymes with ‘dumbass-show-canceling-idiots-FOX’, may not recognize his genius. But that’s fine. The rest of us do.

  1. I have never watched Dr. Who. I’m pretty sure I would love it, but there is so much content and I have no idea where I would even start. A+ for everything else here, which I have totally watched and loved 🙂

    1. It is intimidating! I was lucky enough to start when it became a big thing again with the 9th doctor rebooting the series.

  2. So we are basically TV soulmates. Though I didn’t list all these shows they are ALL favorites of mine! Sidenote: I ship Brienne/Tormund so hard and I swear by the old gods and the new that if they don’t survive I will be QUITE CROSS with the GoT writers.

    1. Awesome TV twin powers: Activate! haha.

And quite cross doesn’t begin to cover it. They had better leave those two alone! I hardly dare like anyone in GoT because they will immediately die in the next episode if I express any feelings. Joss Whedon stretches the deaths out better in his shows, which makes them like 2000% more devastating. Gosh do I love that jerk.
