October 1 question – What is the most favorite thing you have written, published or not? And why?
To answer, I’m taking the question in a slightly different direction and telling you about the favorite things I read. Because I try to write using the best parts of my favorite genres, emulating what I love most and writing what I would like to read. The problem is, I read a lot of different things. No genre is safe from my wandering eye. I’ll try just about anything once, from nonfiction or biography to literary fiction and SciFi. But I tend to stick to three main genres: romance, fantasy, and horror.
This right here: but in a book
Do these three have anything in common? They sure don’t. (Although, I have found the rare book which combines all three.) I grew up on fantasy and it remains a favorite. I adore a happily-ever-after, so I read a lot of romance. And no matter how bad a day I’m having, reading horror always reminds me it could be SO MUCH WORSE.
If I have to pick only one, it will be romance. That’s the genre I write in, so it’s by default the one which intrigues, excites, and compels me the most. I’d call that the definition of favorite.
In fact, I’ve written plenty of posts about why I love romance so much (and why calling them bodice rippers lets us know you’re incredibly behind the times).

Not weird at all, it relaxes me too. It’s comforting to know that no matter what else happens, none of that eldritch horror will be happening to me!
I know a lot of people love romance, but I like it to be part of a story in another genre rather than the focus of the story.

You just names 3 of my favorite genres too. I LOVE genre mashups, so thank goodness for the indie revolution, eh? There are a few authors who cover all three.
Off the top of my head I mostly think of the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs for more mythological horror/romance, The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw for quite a sweet romance mixed with the horror, Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole if you want the HEAVY romance with some horror elements, and of course there’s always Kati Wilde’s romantasy series. She’s one of my absolute favorites!
